GSP from Walmart?

First, it's not me, I promise!! I'm still traumatized by buying and worrying about the Orange Saddleback Fugu that you all helped me realize shouldn't be in novice care.

My brother sent me a pic of his new fish today, and it was a gsp he got from Walmart. I've heard NOT to buy any fish from walmart to begin with but I also thought the gsp was another puffer that was intended for brackish-salt water. Any advise for him? I think he has 2 guarami and an albino catfish in his tank, it's a 30 gallon fresh. He doesn't have any plants in the tank, just a castle thing and has gravel at the bottom. Do the GSP like to hide in the sand too?

I imagine walmart is selling a ton of these fish and they must all be going to anyone and everyone and dying off right away. How sad!!!

Any advise I can pass along?

Thank you!
Lynn

The GSP article in the Library would be a good place to start.

Id probably go a head and crank up the heat and add more salt to help battle the ick problem he will more then likely run into soon

I wouldn't start treating for ich unless symptoms show up. It's usually a bad idea to treat for something you can't diagnose, with internal parasites being the exception.

I sent him the artical from the Puffer Library.

Whats up with PetSmart, PetCo, Walmart, and other lfs selling all these puffers as if they are easy freshwater community fish!?!

$$$$$$ is the answer unfortunately. Even thou the LFS is a tad bit more I prefer it bc they're at least a lil bit knowledgeable. I wont got to any of those stores not even for dog food. Lucky for me my LFS has a pet club so I get major discounts from that.

YOur absolutely right about about them needing BW to SW environment as they mature. Thank you for being a concerned fish keeper. Most ppl find this site when its an emergency. Good for you wanting to help him out.

You can link him to the GSP article in our library. Also, tell him to find another home for his other fish, as they will not appreciate any salt at all.

Wal-Mart flushes all returns live, so if he decides to keep the other fish rather than the GSP, he'll need to find another store or a friend.

OMG!!! Are you serious!?

Luckily he has a few extra tanks, and can set one up for the other fish. The GSP is quite small right now, so it's not an emergency situation like i had with the orange saddleback, and frankly I'm a little dissapointed in him because I told him the my whole story of learning about puffers.

Thanks for all the advise, yet again!!

No surprise there. Post about it in the hospital section.
