a buddy of mine purchased a "porcupine puffer" But this little guy doesnt look like one. Can someone please confirm if it is a porcupine? The guy at the LFS said its still a baby at the spiky things will get longer. This baby puffer is about 3 to 4 inches

It looks like a porcupine puffer to me. The little guy has really neat coloring!

Well, it is not a Didodon holocanthus, which is the generally sold porcupine puffer. But there is an entire family of fishes Diodontidae (in contrast to usual puffers Tetraodontidae), which are called burrfishes or porcupine puffers not just one species.

Another species of this family is Cyclichthys orbicularis, which is what think you got here. Will reach a similar size as D. holocanthus and is simliar in care requirements.

That's one cute little puffer! Tell your friend to keep him, he's too cute to return and I'm sure he wants a good home.

Wow that's a really unique pork

Well.. it looks like hes going to keep it. But so far hes not eating. Any suggestions on getting it to eat? I think he jumped the gun and bought it right when it came into the LFS.

Try live earthworms, live snails if you can find some (my burrfish went nuts over snails of any type when she was a baby).

There are tons of live snails in his tank ( came with his live rock). I will tell him about the earth worms. Is it a burrfish or "rounded porcupine" puffer. He had his heart set on a Diodon holocanthus

All the research we have found is that they are nocturnal and super shy, exactly opposite of what he wants.

I wished my tank was cycled and ready, otherwise I would take him.

Where is the store, in case anyone in the area wants to go get it once he takes it back?

it is adorable... I'd bump my porcupine down a notch for that little guy!
