Anyone with a cabbage leather, about how often does yours shed? Mine seems like it sheds about once a month, and I'm wondering if this is normal.

That is normal for all leathers. If its growing and is normally extended during the day for the rest of the time I wouldn't worry.

OK cool, thanks, good to know. It's definitely been healthy, practically growing like a weed, so I was thinking that it might just be a sign that it was growing.

My toadstools used to shed on a regular basis when they were smaller, now they are both about 12inches across the top when open and probably shed every 4 months or so

They do shed. I have read somewhere that this is part of their chemical warfare. Their shed will hit other coral and possibly burn them but i haven't really seen this be a problem in my tank.

+1, they do shed a lot at times. I think they did it less once they are established. Be sure to use carbon or better yet, Purigen, in any system with leathers.

Hmm...Purigen seems to be an interesting product, one I don't think we carry. Sounds like something we should have, though, and it's a good company. Thanks PP!

You have to make sure you have adequate water flow for leathers, because it helps them shed, if they can't shed properly they begin to develop yellow patches and refuse to come out, then eventually begin to die.

Good carbon and GFO should be fine, purigen is rather expensive, IMO not needed.

I like it because it can be regenerated over & over & isn't messy, like carbon.

have you actually regenerated it? was it the same as before? I don't want to think of the cash I have spent on carbon during my life...

Also, just a thought... What if you ran a 1micron or less sediment filter in a RO and then after had a purgien stage?

I use Purigen to combat the chemical warfare in my mixed reef. I've regenerated it about 5x now. I use multiple bags of it in each tank. I buy them pre-bagged in packs of 3.
