Month old Dwarf puffers

Hello again!

I am having a problem. I bought 3 DP's from the LFS. They were so tiny they looked barely old enough to have been shipped. They still aren't old enough to be sexed but I fell in love with three of them and bought them. I'm happy to say that they are thriving in my tank and happy and growing fast but they still haven't begun to show if they are male or female yet. The LFS says that they refuse to take fish back once they touched your own tank for safety reasons so that means I have no chance of returning them. I have a well planted 10 gal with lots of rocks and caves. Will they be alright in that? I don't want them to fight and eat one another I love them too much for that. I do have another 10 gal if I have to use it but as is it was a stretch to clear out a tank just for them. Also has anyone else had to teach their puffers how to hunt snails?

Mine couldn't figure it out so i actually had to take a couple snails and seal them to rocks so that they were upside down so they could peck at them and figure out that they were food. I think the LFS tried to feed them flakes and I'm finding that they will eat anything that I have taught them to eat other than that they will want nothing to do with it they will hover around it like bee's staring at it with a confused look.

I find dwarfs to be rather well mannered with their own kind.

In a heavily planted 10 gallon tank - you should be fine with whatever sexes you end up with. Sure, there is often an ideal, ie 1 male, 2 females - but I have never been able to sex a DP at the LFS either...always much too young. I focus on picking out the healthiest specimens.

I have had several combinations of M/F DP's and have never lost one to aggression.

Dwarfs are among my favourite puffers. Enjoy yours and take some pictures for us.

Health is a more important concern, IMO. Do keep your eyes out for aggression issues though, and make it like a jungle in there!

How's This?
