Amazed at all the controversy about brakish fish and puffers

I am really amazed at all the controversy over brakish puffers and set up. Even a signifigant amount of people on this site think that f8's and or gsp's are freshwater. Especially when even this sites pufferpedia list them as brakish. Every different site list very different tank parameters and sg levels and what not. There is really alot of bad information out there.

What's really depressing is that
Fishbase is getting this wrong. They are saying that F8s are FW. And they also say that GSPs are FW and BW (at least they mention BW). Nothing about fully marine when they grow up.

If they are regularly on this site and think f8's or gsp's are freshwater, then they have learned nothing. But you're right. Theres a ton of misinformation out there about puffers. Its most unfortunate.

I'm sure if anyone on this site posted that f8's and or GSPs were freshwater they would be corrected very quickly.

Well, several people do/did keep their F8s in FW for quite some time. But I've never seen anyone say that GSPs are FW...
Can you please point us to any posts where someone said that they were FW?

I Have heard that Gsp's are suppose to go full marine. Are f8's as well?

No, F8's do best in low brackish. You are right about GSP's going full marine as they mature.

The need to go marine for GSPs is valid controversy. Some people have noticed improved colors and activity when they go full marine, but others notice no difference (I think Neale Monks supported this side, and I usually trust Neale Monks!!!). But in the long run, being able to use a skimmer will save you money on water changes, which is the main reason to go marine for most people.

That is true lilgreenpuffer.
Bottom line f8's low brackish, GSP's high brackish to full marine. Miller535 did at one time believe both of these species of puffers could live together.

I agree, F8 are always brackish on our forum. F8 and GSP are sold as FW in LFS.

The confusion with F8's is that in the wild they are found in both freshwater and brakish habitats, however in captivity they are always healthier and longer lived in the recommended low brackish.

Trekenk i did at one time think that Gsp's and F8's could coexist because the store that I bought them in sold them togther iin the same tank. And lots of people that I have read have them together. I am still new to bark fish and am not sure the point to your condecending remark.

Not anyone who's posted here about it more than once.

Miller535 I'm sorry that you took that as a condescending remark as it certainly wasn't meant to be. The fact that you are here and trying to learn is proof that you do care. It is not your fault that the LFS gave you the wrong information, which is not uncommon. Most people that do end up here at the puffer forum is because they have lost fish and are trying to find information to do the best they can. Again sorry if you found my comment condescending but truefully you did think that they could coexist. , not uncommon for new fish keepers.
