I have attempted to research on how to properly breed ramshorn without inbreeding so that their shells/defense get thinner, yet I cannot find a good answer. I turn to you great folks for help. Has anyone had success with breeding ramshorn without their shells becoming thin? Pointless to breed if no benefit to my puffer's teeth

But alot of rammys like 100 to start. I have no prob with shells being thin. I think water hardness can affect their shells. maybe check that. I wouldnt worry bout them inbreeding, I dont. Also you could add a cuttle bone for there shells.

Yeah I was going to say that calcium has something to do with it, so SammyDee is right -- get a cuttle bone. That's what I did, it's much cheaper than the liquid stuff that's available and it's the same thing. I have a cuttle bone in my crab's tank as well. I also bought extra cuttle bones for some of my puffer's tanks, just trying to figure how to secure it in the tank so it doesn't float around.

did you try a cable tie and a sucker thing suzanne?

That's a great idea, Lesley, thank you for that! See, this is why it's good to get other advice and suggestions .... something I didn't think of.

I actually took a cable tie and attached the cuttle bone to a piece of bogwood that sits upright, so it won't float away and hopefully the puffers will peck at it. I had it sitting on the tank brace in the middle and when I picked it up, oh my! the smell was unbelievable!! I didn't think about water getting underneath and making it smelly ... but it was horrible. So at least it's in the water now and stationary. Thanks again Lesley for that idea.

yes, diversity and supplements will help.

I started out with a single large pond snail in my tank.. it laid eggs those hatched .. bla bla bla, the offspring are far smaller than the original given the same amount of time to grow.

Also the snails in my main tank have much harder shells than those in the "breeder" tank. Same tap water same perams .. etc.
