Ok, so - I have a 10gallon tank (cycled), and an almost cycled (it's really close!) 23 gallon tank.

I LOVE my Fahaka puffer - but Reality is setting in. I'm probably already doing harm as he is stuck in a 10 gallon tank until the next once cycles, but it just looks like the money is NOT going to come fast enough (I haven't worked for a WEEK at work, they are out of work... probably getting laid off)... With the rocky future ahead, I'm not sure I will be able to provide this precious Fahaka with the proper home (a.k.a. 150 gal tank.)

I don't want to stop my fishkeeping, but with the options of a 10gal, and a 23 gal - what kinds of puffers COULD I get? And how many? I've been poking around the web, and here... I may have misread a post somewhere but I thought someone said something about a 10gal with 4-5 DP's in it? I can't find it now LOL...

I really want to do right by my little guy that I have now - and let someone have him that can provide for him, as I don't think I will be able to anytime real soon. He deserves much better. My daughter loves him too, so hoping that if I can make the transition from him to a more suitable puffer, she won't be too heartbroken. I'd like an active puffer, too. Not sure I want to wind up going marine; but it might be a neat project down the road...

What's the max number of DP's for a 10gal? or 23? Just curious... Still weighing all of our options lol

10 gallon=2, 23 gallon=4 maybe 5, but thats pushing it. One male and three females would be perfect.

Another day off of work... making this more and more of a reality. I think I kind of have my mind set, as well - I need to find him a new home; the boyfriend would be happier - I'll be sad at first, but I'm sure my new wee puffers will make that easier.... And it will be better knowing he is in a better home.

Where in Indiana are you? I have a friend looking for a Fahaka. If you decided to go that route please email me. I may have interesting ideas for you.

Have you thought about a pair of irrubescos in the 23gal? They're really cute and have tons of attitude/personality.

That's a thought They are quite pretty too!

I agree with Flutter about the irrubesco, but if you do go with them, please try and have a few nice plants in there, as well as caves and things for them to go inside of and places to hide. The nice thing about the redeyes is that they are active and attractive. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

Yes, it would need to be heavily decorated. Ours don't hurt each other but they aren't exactly cuddly either. They hang out together whenever I see them (in the feeding area nonetheless ) but they all have the option of not seeing each other if they want to. I should try and get pictures as I'm happy with the way the tank has turned out. We went for more of a biotope. We have 4 pieces of driftwood, 3 caves, tons of vals, windelov java fern (attached to one of the caves), and a crypt. We also have some moss in storage in there. The wood has tinted the water too so it's a nice dull yellow colour.

Those would both work. Carbon would be best though. Eventually they'll stop leeching tannins though. I love the look in our tank and I think the puffers like it too.

It's actually good for some fish, and really is harmless, even though it makes everything yellowish.

I imagine it makes it look dirty. I think id prefer crystal clear water so I can easily the small things going on in plants and wood. MORE HD looking

Pre soak it in a bucket changing the water several times till it doesnt look like tea anymore.
