The Puffer Forum

Just wondered if anyone had any experience of valentini puffers and their partiality to LPS corals (and perhaps some sps).

I have one in a reef tank and i've never seen him nip a coral but over the last few months a few LPS (torch, acans and duncans) are all struggling in my tank. Perhaps coincidence I dunno.

Either way I wouldn't ever get rid of him, just interested in views and opinions.

I think most of the net says they are not but if it's working for you, thats great. Maybe watch him as he gets bigger. I tried feeding my puffer some softies but he didn't touch them. Maybe LPS's are more tasty.

Mine stayed away from them for about a month & then all hell broke loose. No coincidence--no such thing as a "reef safe puffer".

Strikes fear into me that!!

I've had for I think 6 months now - so perhaps I'm one of the lucky ones!! Time will tell.

Like I said--there is a reason your LPS are starting to look poorly. They're sneaky lil devils!

You have to get the whole embed code off of youtube. Just a link doesn't work. Most of the vids here don't work for me.

A bit hard to tell. Is it only on that one fin or is it on other fins? On its body at all? It looks more patchy than what mine had but that could have been just the video.

It's predominantly on that fin although there are smaller specs on the others. I can't see anything untoward on his body, that all seems normal.

Mine's only ever eaten yellow polyps, but then all I have are soft corals.

takifugu niphobles seems reef safe to me, didnt touch the snails/crabs/shrimp and never even touched a coral, nipped a mushroom because a krill landed on it and looked like he was trying to barf for the next min from the horrible taste. I had all sorts of softies/lps/sps in the tank....
