I just set up a 40 gal Long aquarium. I would love to add live plants.

I dont want a lot of plants just a couple, five at the most.

Sand is used instead of gravel.

should I go with 3v per gallon ? If so what do you recommend

I don't know about volts, but 2 or 3 watts per gallon is pretty good.

Some plants have a hard time starting in sand, but some do better. Do you have a CO2 system? Fertilizers? Just suggestions

If you're doing 3W per gallon then I think you want to be adding other things. If you're looking for it to stay nice and easy then choose low light plants.

How far of a distance from the light to your substrate? That makes a big difference.

I would like to have grass looking plants nothing fancy.

I'm using Yamato Green on my Java Fern right now in my other tank.

You've seen my 90g discus tank. I have 2 double strip lights,totalling 4 x 40wt bulbs in there. I use http://www.yamatogreen.com as fertilizer, along with Jobe's Plant Spikes by the roots, every 6 months (1/10g). I only use low-light plants. I have some anubius for you.

In deed your discus tank looks amazing.

So I should not go crazy and spent $250 on a lightning.

can substitute CO2?

The Yamato Green Fe only suppliments iron. That would not do any good for CO2, and I doubt Yamato Green has CO2, or does it PP?

I think Mg = Magnesium? Or maybe that Mg
Auxin is a harmone

I don't think any of those are carbon dioxide.
I'd just get the Excel, its easy, its just like a liquid fert, only its not. Its what I use.
