Im in the process of getting a 55 gallon tank up and running. Still have to do everything but I have already decided I want to make it for a puffer/s. Im wondering what would be a good canidate for a pure freshwater puffer that will live in the 55 all the way through adult hood. Would before to have 1 large puffer then a lot of small ones, but im up for anything. I looked over the pufferpedia and it seemed to me that they ethier were small(around 2 inch fully grown) and could do a 20 gallon or they were huge and need 100 or better.
Thanks for any and all info

Welcome to the forum!!
If you have already read the pufferpedia, then you be limited by what you can get.
That will be your biggest hurdle. Good luck puffer hunting

And don't forget to share pics

Ya after reading that I really wish I had the money and room for a 120+G tank. But I live in a small 1 bedroom apartment and dont have the room.
Seems to me my only option is DP's. Though I would rather have a large species, Ill get what I can. How many can fit in a 55 peacefully?

you could do a couple modestus or silus in a 55 gallon (as long as both are juveniles (from the same batch) when introduced)
You could put a lot of dwarfs into a 55 gallon...but you would probably end up with more than one male (I believe they get very territorial and might not like each other)...and you run the risk of them breeding a lot!

5 gal for the 1st one
and additional puffers 3 or 4 gal each so, 15 or 16 DPs in a 55 dal would be fine, in my opinion
I would love to have 55 gal full of DP
Dont forget lots and lots of plants

Yes, a heavily planted DP tank, with a school of cories, would be very nice!

So plant the hell out of the tank, get 10-13 DP's and like 6 corys would be my best bet?
Kinda disappointed, was hoping for one large puffer instead a ton of small ones

If you're willing to try BW, go for a GSP. Or you could do a planted tank with a Palembang, but don't expect to see much of a lurker.

they are very pretty... but VERY boring. i rarely see mine doing anything but being a couch potato (well, i guess leaf potato, he sits in the leaves of one plant all the time.) everyone i know hates that tank cause they say its so boring and empty. and that my palem looks like a rock or a piece of drift wood

cant argue on that one though he does kind of look like one
