Used SW set up

I admit to knowing NOTHING about SW tanks. I am looking at tanks available in some cities and I go by the $2 / gal rule for purchasing used with all the bells and whistles. SW seems to be a little different. I am seeing 300 gal SW set ups.. live rock and all going for over $5000 (acrylic tank). :dazed:

What is the average median for SW sets.. Low end and high end would also be appreciated.

There is no rule like that, I have seen 75/90g complete setups I wouldn't purchase for more than $200, and some worth more than $10,000. It all depends on gear, and as crappy as gear can get it can also get just as fancy and expensive.

I mean just look at lighting prices, you can get a 48" 4x65watt PC fixture for $100 these days and a LED 48" could be $2000+, same with everything from power heads, (mj1200 for $20 and a vortec mp40w for $450) to skimmers and beyond.

Dang .... so unless comparing NEW vs Used I really don't know what is a good deal.

That live rock / live sand really throws me off. Some ppl are charging big $$$$$$ for an established system and I don't know if it is worth it.

it only seems worth it if you can set it up right away. Otherwise it dies just like the freshwater bacteria.

I spent $500 on a 90g RR tank, wood canopy (no lights), wood stand, 20g sump & G-2 skimmer.

Nice, I got all my stuff new, $300 for the 90g RR tank, $150 for the stand, paid someone $200 for a custom canopy, $450 for the 6x54watt T5, I have a CSS220 skimmer that I am going to probably replace with a Super Reef Octo 3000, $399.

This stuff adds up quick.

On the other hand I got a 50g tank RR with stand sump heater powerheads return pump plumbing canopy, 175watt MH w/ PC actinic and the coralife supper skimmer 220, complete setup for $200

I guess if buying used, you just have to get lucky and jump on a deal fast, when I bought that used tank, the post had been up for 5 min, and by the end of the day there were 10+ people responding to get it.
