A friend and I were discussing protein skimmers today and I was wondering what peoples opinions are on different brands. I've been happy enough with with my coralife superskimmers but he has one, too, and his has been a nightmare. He's looking at Remora, among others. Opinions?

excellent skimmer good price I believe the makers were amongst the first to invent skimming?. at any rate I have one of these on a 150g tank and works like a charm,
on my big tank a home I have an octopus which was bout 5x the price and aside capacity/volume/gph im sure it skims the same as above.

Backpacs work well for me.

If buying new ocotpus is by far the best bang for the $.
The Octos (1000 and 2000 series as well as sicce) use needle wheel pumps that are WAY better than a simple venturi pump (bakpak) or downdraft (remora), octos also cost less.
That being said bakpaks and remoras are still good skimmers if you can find one used at a good price.

I don't know...the Remora Pros are so tidy and compact... and with the surface skimmer add-on...sweet! I want one now too...and they are one of the few we can get wholesale, aside from the coralifes. Wish we'd had this distributor before I got my ss

Only bad thing I've read is that the pump is heavy and can fall off, but surely a clamp can be used?

For the pump, just zip tie the hose tight and it should be fine, the claps it comes with are not that great.
The remora pro surface skimmer for mag pumps is HUGE. It really dominates the tank, I useto run one in a 90g. It comes stock with a mag3, but that isnt enough, a mag 5 is ideal.
For a new pro w/ mag3 and surface skimmer its $271.03, no idea what it is wholesale, but for that $ a Octo BH 2000 is going to be better for $100 less. Either way a remora is still a good skimmer.
