I am somewhat new to the aquarium hobby and recently purchased a green spotted puffer which is in a fresh water tank with some african ciclids. Everyone is getting along fine but all of a sudden, my puffer looks like he has developed ich. I am treating the entire tank (some of my ciclids are beginning to rub up against rocks) and wanted to know is this sufficient? Also, per doing some additional research on my dilemma, I have read that my puffer should actually be in brackish or marine conditions. Please advise.

Your puffer should be in brackish water which would help his immune system to fight off things like ich.If you can move the puffer to its on tank and start gradually to increase the SG.There are some great articles here on treating whitespot and also the care of the GSP.

GSP's are technically SW puffers. As adults it is best for them to be moved into a 30-55 USG tank (per puffer) with SW conditions.

Everyone has pretty much nailed it. My puffer developed ich during the first week of owning her, which I believe was due to the fact that she was kept in freshwater. After I began acclimating her to brackish conditions (1.012 SG) the ich dissapeared, and hasnt returned. She is now in full marine conditions (1.024 SG).

This, unfortunately, means you'll likely have to either get another tank, or chose between the puffer and the cichlids. As stated above, a 30-55gal tank would be ideal for the puffer now, and as an adult, so if you decide to get a new tank, chosing a size such as that will prevent the need to upgrade in the future.
