IDK what purple means. What test kit are you using? Try testing it again & read the directions carefully.

Sounds like a Q for RTR.

Unfortunately, I have not seen purple either. I have no clue.
Diatom powder should not in and of itself affect the pH. Twenty-four hours oi strong current could/would like raise the pH of most lower-flow FW tanks, but I would have expected much less effect on normally well-aerated SW,
Why the long run?
Were you clearing a heavy bloom in an immature tank?
Or cleaning up curing live rock?

why not spring for the big $20 ph digital kit off ebay?
there may be something in the tank that is tainting the sample.

So what is the pH now? What, if anything, do you dose, (calc/alk)?

ph 8.4 now i was messing around with the 4 3200 gph currents and perhaps spiked the 02 lvl in tank?. if you can imagine an underwater tornado thats what i had going on.
but the good news is my coralline algae is blooming like mad i might just wait till the end of april now before adding fish

re Mek0ng i dont dose with anything >>>but im really thinking of going corals an anemones / reef safe fish.
(tho the gf is dead set on porc puffer) wich means i wont get my way lol.
re RTR i ran the diatom to clean up some of the curing process and i just got it so wanted to play with new toy

Porcs are among the most personable fish in the world, this would be nothing for me to complain about.
Some of the stuff you stirred up might have played with the pH.
