The Puffer Forum

I found Mistah Puff (T. cochinchinensis) floating this morning, so I'm obviously a bit upset about him passing. But I thought I'd post a message n let people know that Mistah Puff has gone to the great Mekong River in the sky!
I don't know exactly why he died when he did, but he had seemed a little quiet for a couple of days. Obviously something *was* wrong, but there were no obvious signs of disease or anything. He had found a different place to lurk rather than his usual puff-cave hideout, which was strange but not really conclusive. But as a precaution I'd immediately performed a water change and put a little Melafix in the tank in case he was brewing something, but perhaps it was just a natural death.
When I took him home nearly three years ago he was fully grown so I have no real way of knowing how old he was. He was in a group of several puffers at the lfs, some of which looked a little beaten up (not suprisingly since they are a solitary and aggressive species), so maybe they were even wild caught? I don't know. Either way, Mistah Puff is no more and I now have rather a sad looking empty tank in my room. I keep looking over to it to see him and then I remember he's not there!

No I don't think I'll do an autopsy, I wouldn't cope too well with that I'm afraid! He had gone very pale when I found him... only patches of his skin were the right colour and the rest of him had gone a creamy colour, so he must have died during the night and been gone for a while before I found him this morning.

Thankyou. I don't think I'll get puffers for a while. Mistah Puff never ate snails for whatever reason so I had to give him different sorts of crunchy foods like shellfish. So consequently I never needed a snail breeding tank. I don't want to get another T. cochinchinensis to replace him as it would be really weird to have a Mistah Puff lookalike in there! So that only really leaves snail eating species like dwarf puffers or south americans. I will definately keep puffers again, but maybe when I have more space for a really big tank so that I can get a fahaka or something like that.
I may get a couple of rams and some panda cories or something. Awww that does mean that I'll be a member of a puffer forum without a puffer though

PS... and about the lack of Puffer, if you buy some plants for the rams/cory tank you may very well find snails and then .... well... who know eh?

Yeah I thought that something nice and colourful like rams would be fitting inhabitants for his tank, especially since it's already got loads of plants in it and has a cave etc.
I just bought a 'seafood cocktail' from Tesco a couple of days ago for Mistah Puff. The one with king prawns, squid and mussels! My goldfish can have some of the prawns chopped up I think as a treat.

So sorry to hear about your loss. You can at least take pride in the fact that you provided an excellent environment for him while he was in your care.

Yep I will stay on the forum . I've been made a moderator of the 'Other Pets' section a couple of days ago so I have obligations now lol.

Sorry for your loss. Maybe see if you can find a miurus or suvattii (another lurking species who don't eat snails, or as much)

TPF is mostly about puffers, but as you can see by all the threads in non-puff forums, we have lots more to discuss here than just puffers! Thanks for staying!

Tihsho I thought I might go for something low maintenance for now rather than another puffer, like some little panda corys and maybe a pair of rams or something. Haha... so that there's some movement in my tank besides the gentle sway of plants . Bless him... Mistah Puff was great, but he wasn't the most interesting creature to watch. If I were to get another puffer I would want to try with a hunter species rather than another lurker.

My Miurus cruises my tank all the time. Quite active when not wanting to eat. She hunts shrimp actively too.
