I plan on getting 3 DP for my 10g once it is cycled. I know they like a lot of plants in a tank. I will put a coconut with some java moss on it. But I was wondering if I could get away with buying a few fake plants for my tank or do they prefer real plants? Thanks in advance.

I've always like real, and its easier to maintain (you don't have to spend time using an old tooth brush brushing away algae.

Plants only cost 9 dollars technically but I got them for 6 because of a buy 2 get 1 free deal at petco.

+1 to OCgatergal'scomments. Live plants are much better for the tank, but if you have no experience with live plants, there is a learning curve to keeping them. It is not difficult, just different. Plastic or silk plants will provide the cover the DPs need. If there is live Java Moss,it will likely be the spawning site used.

I have to say that I have always preferred live plants, just so much nicer and you get to see them grow. And actually I think as far as expense goes, you will spend more money on plastic plants, but when it comes down to it, I don't think the little puffers will care one way or the other, as long as they have places to hide and swim around, that's all that's important.

Agreed. There are pros and cons to both, but the fish really don't care.

Pros for live plants:
1. They are built-in nitrate filters.
2. If you have sand, they help "stir" the soil to prevent anaerobic pockets.
3. You get a more natural look.
3. You can get a sense of accomplishment when they grow, and sometimes a little cash if you sell the extras (well, more like recuperate some money from supplies like food, ferts, etc.)
4. Easy to grow if you pick appropriate plants for your setup (low light for low tech tanks, etc.)
5. Only have to gravel vac lightly around them (if at all) and regular gravel vac where it is not planted.

Pros for fake plants:
1. Easy to clean.
2. Won't get "messy" looking or overgrown, i.e. less maintenance than live plants.
3. Can be easily disinfected.
4. Easy to rearrange.
5. Many new kinds that look pretty natural.
