Hi I'm new to this forum. I planning to keep some lurker puffers and doing my research before actually buying one! I was thinking of using marineland c series canister filter (rated at 360) on a 30 gallon tank. Is this overkill? I was reading in this forum that over filtration is essential to keeping puffers. I also will be doing water changes weekly about 30-50%. The tank will house one puffer maybe a Palembang, Suavitti, or a Murius. Is this set up going to be okay?

Whats the LPH or GPH on that filter? I turn my tank over 10 times per hour.

the Marineland C-360 should be fine, rated @ (MAX) GPH = 360

There is no such thing as too much filtration. Too much current is possible though. Do remember that ratings on pumps and filters is for the drive unit only, with no head and no media. Your actual flow will be a fraction of the published rating and will generally decline from that between cleanings.

All of my tanks are multifiltered. None have too much filtration. The current is directed and controlled to what is appropriate to the fish and the setup.

Just an FYI on the Marineland filter. The Aquastop block is fragile and the valve doesn't open all the time. Mine just broke and it was cheaper to build a new wet dry than replace the block. Other than that it was just an OK filter. If you want cheaper and better go with the AquaClear series HOB filter, powerful and very reliable.

Fluval canister filters have been good to me!

+1 for Aquaclears, they've never done me wrong--been using them for >30 years. If you order from DFS, don't forget the rebates they offer, stickied in our Gen Disc Forum.

+2 for the AC's best bang for your buck IMO and they hold quite abit of bio

Overfiltration is always a good thing. I use an aquaclear 50 and an aquatech 20-40 for my 40 gallon tank. I'm housing 1F8 and an OC.

I've got a Marineland C360 on my 75g tank, and it's more than enough for it. I would go with the C220 for your 30g. If the flow is too much, you can always slow it down by putting a sponge over the intake strainer. I've had my C360 for about a year, and I couldn't love it more! Granted, it's my one and only canister, but it's dead silent, super easy to prime, and holds a ton of media.

Another good option would be the Marineland Emperor 280 if you decide to go with a power filter instead of a canister.
