Great to see someones found a way to breed them

but non toxic? for what purpose? ....

you take away the danger then you lose interest in eating Fugu....

I think puffers should be left in wild or in aquarium not on a plate.

however I guess japan needs to look at breeding foods since they have an insane jelly fish epidemic coming, wich will prolly spill over to rest of world. /shrug ill stick to cows and chickens

I've heard something similar except it wasn't puffers.. it was jellyfish, and they weren't being bred either, this specific species adapted to FW and became non-toxic.. it was pretty interesting stuff!

Why they would want to have a non-toxic puffer I would probably guess is to eat them .. I agree to stick with cows & chickens! lol Although they can be someone's "pet" too

Whenever people say they've had Fugu and I'm near a computer I show them a picture of Kaleeko.. pulls at their heartstrings a little bit lol

The reasons why non-toxic puffers are eaten are the same as the reasons why chickens are eaten.

However, eating non-toxic puffers can be a fatal experience, too: try it in front of Pufferpunk...

I just find it funny how people think it's ok to eat one animal over another.

I simply can't understand how someone can think that a puffer is more deserving of live over a cow or pig... I tend to place a value on life itself and not the shape it comes in (as I do with people).

Eat whatever you want, I'm OK with that but it's not right to say that one animal deserves to die and another doesn't.

Breeding out the toxicity is probably to create a reliable food source. Reliable in the fact that people don't have the risk of DYING when they eat fugu! While the appeal in fugu is probably the risk you take, I'm sure a lot of people enjoy the way it tastes. I'd be more willing to try fugu if it didn't come with the risk. So to me, it's just like any other fish farm idea.

id eat a person before I ate a puffer.. but thats just me lol.

HAHAHA! Dark, that actually made me laugh out loud... I wouldn't eat a person.. but I definately wouldn't eat a puffer.. no matter what! lol

yeh I dont see the fascintation of eating Fugu

but the other point is .. someone or there is a way to breed fugus (well this specific ones anyways)

rather than collecting it in the wild... they could be bred to be sold as pets?

i mean we breed cows chickens pigs .. fatten them up and eat it?

and in the pet trade.. it will not matter if a puffer is toxic or not... I guess thats one key thing out of it

I do understand. I haven't eaten mammals in over 3 years. i have no excuse to eat poultry & seafood, except I need to get my protein somehow & I just don't see them as cute.

I also don't think it's any more wrong to eat a puffer than to eat a chicken or a cow or any other animal. I consider it wrong to eat shark fins as it is endangering them, half the shark is simply wasted, and the shark is essentially brutally murdered. But breeding puffers for food seems like a good thing to me.

I don't understand how people can place lesser value on other creatures lives.....

I have been vegetarian for two years, and loving it. I know It's not much, but every little bit helps.

Quite right, 1/2 was a bit of an understatement!

They chop off the fins & throw the poor bleeding shark back into the water to bleed to death. That's another reason not to use shark cartilage in supplements.
