The Puffer Forum

I bought a South American Puffer today. Very excited about having this guy/gal! Very cute fish. Added to my tank about three hours ago, and has already eaten frozen bloodworms. Good sign.

As I have only a 15 gallon tank, and because I don't want to deal with adding salt to my tank, this is the only puffer I could get (I wanted something larger than a dwarf). I really thought I'd have a difficult time finding one. Called many stores to locate it - the store that had it only had 3 left from a shipment that had just come in this week. I guess I got lucky.

Anyway, just wanted to share the excitement

Hopefully it goes well. I am not to enthusiastic about AC's quality but I bet your spoiling like hell, so he will be a healthy puff!

After a bit of observation, I've decided to name "him" Eager Edgar. This is because everything this fish does - eat, swim, greet, etc - is done with such unabashed eagerness. No hesitancy in this particular fish! Every move he makes, every lunge toward food, every trip up, down, around, or across the tank, every greeting when I approach, is all done with such intention, that there is no doubt this fish is on a MISSION. A mission to live life to its fullest. I like it!

I do have a couple ottos in the tank as well. I knew that might be problematic, but decided to try. This morning, a couple of minutes after I turned the lights on, Edgar nipped a piece of tail fin off of one of the ottos. Surprising to me was that the otto barely reacted. Moved about an inch along the glass, and then continued to munch from the side of the tank. I quickly fed Edgar, which seems to have gotten his mind off of being nippy!

Hmm, my SA puff did chase otos abit, and he always looked very curiously at their tails and fins. The otos in my tank were however, extremely nimble, and once they sensed that suspicious glance from the puff, they would swim to a safer spot, so I never had a fin-nip situation
