So i decided to put this theory to the taste! ahmm Test!

My fahaka basically eats anything but as a kiddie he went nuts on scallops and now older absolutely hates scallops! Spits them out and WILL NOT eat them or for that matter even chew on them!
So anyway the test... i was eating a hotdog and he as usual was pushing his fat lips against the glass showing his teeth so i said ... u want a piece.. LOL I gave him a piece of a hotdog and he ate it! Swalloed it perhaps!
These fish do not chew!
Furthermore i always feed my fahaka frozen food, he eats everything frozen and now he doesnt really care for anything not frozen... Do you think he'd get brain freeze? LoL

That was funny ACF ... especially when you wrote, "pushing his fat lips against the glass ...." I read it aloud to my husband and we both laughed. Your Fahaka must be a very funny puffer.

Not only are hot dogs a really bad idea for a fish, it's not so great human food either. Please resist feeding any more hot dogs to your fish! Also the same thing with frozen foods--yes, it will cause damage to it's stomach & greatly reduce it's internal temp. ALWAYS defrost all foods before feeding out.

I would think that any "meat" would be bad for fish ... although I keep hearing about people feeding beef heart to some fish. Somehow the idea sounds horrible to me because what are the chances of a fish getting beef in the wild??!!

processed or cooked food, even seafood such as shrimp or mussels, may not be digestable to puffers.............

Yea i agree, i dont normally eat hot dogs but it was a special day
I always feed my puffer a seafood medley i get @ the grocery store which is frozen.. calamary, octapus, oysters, shrimp and other assortment fish (raw). I also throw crayfish in his diet from time to time and other live fish.
Problem, He honestly doesnt care for anything not frozen these days. Its odd.
Umm say a cow walks into the nile ... a puffer is sitting there looking @ this .. leg*... i swear he would take a chunk out of it! LoL
These fish are too dam curious and im just waiting for him to take a taste outta me when im cleaning his tank!!

Beefheart is a perfectly good food for many fish.

Think about it, though - does it really matter if they come across it in the wild or not? It can be good for them even if they wouldn't. For example, I feed my bettas frozen krill sometimes, and they would never come across it, but it's stil good for them.

Hot dogs are just plain unnatural and no one should probably eat them... But I like them. I just wouldn't give them to my fish.

LoL ... yes it was a special day for even me eating them! It was just a test to see if he actually tastes/chews what he's about to eat.

haha "pushes his big fat lips against the glass"..... i totally get u on that.... "Kukah" always does that! i thought it was just him being wierd.... funny, i didnt know it was normal .... i never thought of buying that frozen seafood medley at the store... its a pretty good idea... thanks for unknowingly giving me a great idea haha.... btw, how old is he @ 12"? and how long has he been that big? still growing??? just asking so i know what to look for.... mine is only 8"

anyway.... no hot dogs! lol im jus playin.... my red devil cichlids are aquatic garbage cans.... my boyfriend has given them everything from hotdogs, to grapes, ham, crackers.... everything.... not that i necessarily agree with him doing it (so please dont chew me up about it guys) any way... it is pretty amusing to see what they will eat, sometimes you just cant help but laugh. (my boyfriend doesnt do it that often, so dont get mad guys lol)

Someone on here once lost a Fahaka due to a neighbor kid feeding it gummy candy constantly (it was in the lobby of her building or something like that).

Paris does the lips against the glass thing.. we call her our little "window licker". Its quite annoying when you are trying to eat something and her face is plastered against the glass, if she wasn't underwater she'd be drooling.

Resist the temptation.. natural foods usually won't kill your fish (fruit, veggies, whole meats) but hot dogs.. well, its a wonder hot dogs don't kill us! Seriously, probably not the worst thing you could feed your fish but I wonder that it didn't have a heck of a stomach ache.

hahahaha o man i couldnt stop laughing when i read the part about your little window licker drooling over your dinner, i had to read it to my boyfriend he was laughing histerrically because we can totally identify with it with Kukah hes always dragging his lips across the tank walls hehe

my fahaka is a fussy feeder in that he wont eat any kind of fish only inverts so i give him whole uncooked king prawns, muscles etc.. he is very large now and still growing at 14-15 inches and he always does a strange dance when he wants food (all the time) he sticks his lips on the glass and swishes his tail, which makes loads of water go all over the floor

What size tank is he in? Filbert is in a 125g tank & about the same age as yours & he's just getting to about a foot now.

i always feed my fahaka steak with cranberry sause (not really ofcourse hehe)
