Spotted Puffer Eye Problem

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Read this before posting!!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Spotted Puffer Eye Problem

Post by firestorm52 »

I bought a Spotted Puffer yesterday. He is my first Puffer fish so I'm still learning about the species. But this morning when i kicked on the lights I noticed his left eye is slightly cloudy. I've been fourm posting and searching all day when I was directed to this fourm to ask for advice. He seems to be fine he has been swimming all around the tank and eatting my featherdusters :? He just had a nice big meal of bloodworms as well.

From what i have been reading it sounds like his eye could have been scratched when he was in the net and or something in my tank. He was swimming against the net quite a bit when i freshwater dipped him. But I don't know what to do about the scratched eye (assuming that is the problem) is there anything I can do to help the little guy out?

He lives in a 45 Gallon tank with a Flame Hawkfish, Cinnamon Clown and A Lawnmower Blenny I've had the other fish in the tank for over a year now I do water changes every two weeks. I did a change about 3 days before I got the puffer, thats another reason I believe it could be a scratch. I have not tested the water but I'll try and do that sometime today. The only changes I have made in the past week or so was adding him and the lawnmower blenny to the tank yesterday.

Any other suggestions/ideas would be greatly appricated,

Thanks,
Dakota

PS: I'll try to get a picture of it in a few minutes

sorry it's not a very good photo he is really hard to snap a picture of he swims all over the place and it was only on his left side. Its not very cloudy just a lite film like over his eye

Well, usually we like to get the information requested above in pink, but just for starters I'd say use some Melafix Marine. It's very mild and it can really help for minor scrapes and bruises like this.

Definitely could try Melafix. But most importantly, ensure that your water is in perfect condition. Dirty water will cause wounds/scratches to become infected, so water change, water change, water change!!

His eye is almost back to 100% already so he must have just bumped it on something last night in the dark  Thanks for the replies I was really worried this morning.

Yay! Good to hear. Fish can be surprisingly resilient.

It's interesting and cool that you put him in marine right off: not many people who are new to puffers know to put GSPs into saltwater. Did you learn about their needs here?

I heard on here that they could be full marine and I already have a 50 gallon with a few other marine fish (Flame Hawkfish, Cinnamon Clown, Lawnmower blenny) that I've had established for over a year now. And when I saw this GSP at my LFS I decided I had to get him. I am worried he may become more aggressive towards my other fish when he gets older, but so far so good. I'll just play it by year and keep a close tab on him. Puffers have always fascinated me and I'm glad to finally have one.

Did you acclimate him from FW? How long did that take?
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...
