so i just put my ceylon in a new 55 last night from a 20l. he seemed fine at first and kept swimmin around. this morning i find him on the bottom bent in half... he came up and straitened out after i put some food it but then he started acting odd again. he is swimin up to objects rubbing his side on it for a split second then darts away(fastest i ever seen him swim)

If he's rubbing his side on stuff, it could be ich. That's one of the signs of ich. Does your puffer suddenly look like he's been sprinkled with salt?

Sounds like what my F8 did when he had ich, but never had the tell-tale white "salt" spots. A month after treatment, he's fine.

I'd always be concerned if any of my puffers were rubbing against anything, but having said that, my redeye puffers sometimes go up to a plant leaf and flick their body against it, and while that may sound like ich (what we call "whitespot"), that wasn't an issue in this particular instance. I don't recall any of my other puffers doing it, just the irrubesco, and usually the big males. It didn't look as if they were trying to itch themselves as much as it looked like a deliberate act, for what reason, I have no idea. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

I would think if the Ceylon has ich, you'd see at least one spot somewhere .... so I'd give it a good looking over to be sure before using any meds on it.

According to the Puffer Library....


"Some symptoms before white spots appear may include flashing, clamped fins, weakness, loss of appetite, and decreased activity. In the case of heavy gill infestations, you may not see evidence of white spots, but may find your fish breathing heavily at the surface of your tank. Secondary bacterial and respiration difficulties may result, so keep an eye out for complications in addition to the ich infection."

And there you go .... I didn't know you wouldn't see any spots, but I stand corrected.

Lol schismy007 , I wasn't tryin to be a smart butt...i'm in the middle of treating a tank for Ich and have spent alot of time going over the Puffer Library for info

You could have introduced the ich to your tank if you had bought any used equipment or put new plants in there...if you think this is what it is check out the library for proper treatment...treating ich in puffers differs greatly from fish with scales...

Most fish and aquariums carry the ich parasite (darn central filtration) and when subjected to some form of stress (a tank move) can start showing signs of it. Stress lowers the immune system and the puffer can't fight the parasite as well.

Do read the article in the Library - by "meds," I think schismy means the salinity change, not actual medications. Many medications, especially ich meds, are extremely dangerous for scaleless fish.

got home not to long ago and he seems to be swimmin around chilling. he does like to lay on the sponge filter tho now instead of his wood haha. i got some meds from the store but will not be giving him any until i know for sure he has something. he is still doing the swimmin into things and then whipping away quickly.

Don't use those meds, even if he does have ich. I repeat - dangerous!

Please read this before giving him any Meds! They can be harmful to your puffer!

i have read it. and am not treating anything yet as i do not think he has it at this time. the meds i was given was from LFS by my friend who also has puffers and he said he has used it many times in the past and it works great. half the suggested dose and only if i see spots. tupac seems better now tho so i will wait to see how he is in the morning.
