I currrently have my F8 in a 20gal high. I read that she would probably like a 20gal long better because of the longer footprint and wider swimming room. Is this true? Should I switch her to a 20L?

If you've got one available & it's not too much trouble, long is always better than high, except for tall fish. If it's just a single F8, I'm sure the tall one is fine for him.

With just one F8, it doesn't matter too much, whichever you prefer. If you see your F8 pacing the glass even though you have lots of stuff for it to explore and gets enough food, then you might want to try it, but even just rearranging the existing decor can sometimes stop this behavior.

Like PP said, long tanks are generally better for the larger footprint and thus larger surface area which helps with gas exchange and also more area for them to swim across. If you have a tall fish (like angels), then the taller tanks are better, but you still want to maximize the amount of swimming room and gas exchange.
