Hi all, im new to these parts, Ive been setting up ready for my 1st marine tank with the intention of homing a puffer and a lionfish.

my tank arrives Tuesday 6x2x2, Im settled on the Lion id like but am still unsettled on the Puffer.

I was looking at the Dog faced puffer however I recently came across the Arothon Nigrapuntas, my question is- is the nigrapunctas and the dog faced puffer one and the same ?

ive seen pictures of the nigrapuntas in a white/gray with black spots and yellow fins and tail and have also seen it totaly yellow but also in a kind of black/blue.

can anyone give me some help on this species, I love the dogfaced puffer but really love the yellow/golden colour.

I'm unsure as to the compatability of those two fish, though. Sounds risky. Someone else will chime in.

tyhanks lilgreenpuffer, thats cleared up my suspiscions and I was right, as for copatilbillity, I personally know sevral people have and do keep these two species together.

theres is alaways the risk of the puffer being a fin nipper what with the Lion being a slower moving fish, however its a 6` tank with just those 2 fish in it so they should have room not to feel presured.

At the store where I work, we put puffers in with lionfish all the time, and in the ten months I've worked there we've never had even the slightest problem. Of course, we would not do this unless the puffers were of roughly similar size (or bigger) to the lionfish.

They should be fine. Dog faces tend to be docile puffers. But have back up plan in case it doesn't work out.

The dog faces(Arothron nigropunctatus)its one of the most peaceful species in marine puffer family.
Normally they should be fine......

thanks everyone for your thoughts, while in a fish shop yesterday (still trying to find one I like and trust to provide my fish) the guy said "you want a golden hush puppie in that tank" I replied well that would be a Meleagris wouldnt it? and they grow to 3 feet long, to big for my tank.

he claimed it wouldnt grow that big in my tank.

from the research Ive done, im of the understanding that a fish grows acording to its species and not its surroundings !

am I right, or is there another yellow/golden puffer ?

Well, many fish do grow to their surroundings, but only because they are stunted by them.

To bad... they'll probably be selling that puffer to a guy with a 30g tank.
