The Blue-Spotted Puffer which grows to roughly 48" requires a minimum of a 300g aquarium, whereas the Starry Puffer which grows to roughly the same size requires such a large space that TPF has just called their minimum tank size "The Ocean."

The Mbu Puffer which is small [30"] compared to the B-SP requires a minimum tank size of 1000g.

My question is why doesn't the Blue-Spotted Puffer require an extremely large space like the other two? [And vice-versa]

All 3 are best kept in the wild.

That still doesn't quite answer my question...

Besause most folks still insist on keeping mbus.

i think its becuese the mbu if very very active fish but i think if the dim our right i 150 gallon is good enough

HUH? First, punctuation is the key to getting a message across and making it readable. Second, it's not because they are "very very active" it's because of the bioload and hormone load they produce and the need to dilute it.

Think about it for a moment. Envision a three-foot fish in a 150g tank. Then ask yourself whether this is a good arrangement.

Also, don't forget that saltwater fish in general are much more sensitive to overstocking and poor water conditions than freshwater fish.

The old "rule" that we all know is pretty much worthless, even supports it.. 1" of fish per gallon for freshwater, 1" of fish per 5 gallons for salt water. Sure that "rule" is total bunk and can't be followed due to body shapes, bioload, sensitive species, etc.. but even that dumb old thing takes into consideration that a saltwater fish should have 5x the water space as a freshwater one of the same size.

Now, the question probably should be.. should we change that minimum requirement on the blue spotted, probably! I wonder if that wasn't intended to be 3000 gallons and the 300 is a typo.
