Puffer Choices! What do YOU think I should get?

I have dwarfs but I also have a empty 55 gallon and I want to do another fresh water puffer tank. I want to get either a Mbu, Fahaka, Pignose, Red-eye, Congo, Amazon, or Common puffer(Tetraodon cutcutia). What do you think? Any Suggestions? (besides spotted and fig 8)

Have a look at the PufferPedia. Mbus and fahakas definitely get waaaaay too big for a 55, but if you look at the species profiles, you'll find a good fit.

Also, do you want a lurker (only active at feeding time) or a more active species?

If mbu or fahaka, what plans for upgrading do you have?

Not sure on how big Fahakas get, but I know that Mbu's can exceed lengths of 30". A puffer this big would require a tank long enough and wide enough for it to turn and swim freely (fins can damage if scraped along the walls of the tank/rocks and foliage). This tank would have to be at least 135 Gallons, so cross Mbu's off of your list unless you can upgrade in the near future.

Edit://

I would recommend a tank much larger than 135g though. 200g+ would be a good choice for the comfort of your puffer.

For an mbu, 1,000+. With the 55 as the only option, mbus and fahakas are pretty much out of the question.

I vote red-eyes.

I doubt 1000g+ would be necessary...

It would. ;) The tank would need to be four feet front to back at least, and I should think twenty feet long at *least,* just to allow for their potential full size of three feet. Then you have to take bioload into account.

Never really thought of that... I guess it'll be a while before my dream of attaining an Mbu Puffer becomes reality. :pout:

I guess if I save for the next ten years of my life it could be possible... haha

Maybe you should just get a job at an aquarium! Wouldn't that be awesome?

If I got a mbu or fahaka I would try to get them at a young stage.
