Pets make for very poor gifts, especially fish, as most people aren't prepared for one. Puffers even worse, since they need special care & feeding & don't do well at all in an uncycled tank.

The bigger species grow at a rate of about an inch a month (mbus, fahakas). I have no clue about ceylons.

Have you considered buying a used tank? craigslist.org has some amazing deals. If this isn't an option, then returning the fish to the store would be the most responsible option. You could even print up a care sheet to be given to the new owner.

I bought my Ceylon last November. He was about 1.5-1.75" long when I got him, now he's 5" easy and I swear he gets bigger every day.

55g is perfect for a singleton, as they grow to 7".
