Sorry I put this here, it's just that the DIY doesn't get that much action. Does anyone know how to make your own syphon under $5?

Just doesn't get as much action because there are less posts there, not because no one looks.

you can make a syphon for pretty much free..... just get a hose. suck one one end make sure its below water level thats all a syphon is

How does the water get in the bucket then?

Making the end that you would suck the gook out of the gravel with isn't so simple though.

So I should just buy one?

Ha. I practiced outside with a bucket and I got it! You suck it until it goes over the side, then you get your mouth outta there! No, I got just a tube.

I used to just do that, (get a hose and suck the other end until it starts running) it was disgusting. some would get into my mouth.. not a good idea.. i just bought myself one from walmart for like ten dollars.

What do you use now then?

For awhile took a small power head that I pulled out of a cheap 10gal filter and used it to start a syphon.

Although all you really need to do is scoop up water with the syphon and pinch off the hose, then start the syphon by letting the water flow out after you put the head of the syphon back into the tank. If that makes any sense... It take a little practice. Let the gravity do it for you.
