All right I'm new to The Puffer Forum and this is my first post. I have a ten gallon tank( will get a bigger one once I find one at the flea market or yard sale) With a 2 inch Green Spotted Puffer in it ... with two giant danios that are about his size. What i'm wondering is if he will end up killing them or if I should just remove the two danios alltogethor.
PS is there an obvious way to tell if a puffer is having stress.

GSPs are stressed when they stay dark or have a dark line around their middle. Also, if they don't eat or swim normally. Please read the GSP article in our Library for more info. Look around for at least a 30g tank for him. How long has your tank been set up? Have you tested the water? (Ammonia, nitrite, nitrite)

The tank was set up on super bowl sunday and I got him about 4 1/2- 5 weeks later. I don't know how you test the tank so i haven't yet. He is bright green and has a white belly with a little dark spot near his tailfin. Will the danios bug him?

Were the danios in there for a while? I do think they will definately stress him in a tank that small. Please read that GSP article.

To test the water, take a sample to the local fish store (LFS). As soon as you can, purchase your own test kit, preferably the liquid kind. API is a good brand.

Did you cycle your tank? (Letting it run for a while isn't cycling - you have to add an ammonia source, etc.)

Check Craigslist. You can find good deals on there sometimes.

The fish attendant at Pet Extreme told me that having the giant danios in the tank for a month would cycle it. But she also said that my tank would be brackish if I just put in aquarium salt.

Again I ask: Have you read that article? It tells you everything you need to know about caring for a GSP.

The danios have produced enough bacteria to support the danios. Add another fish & it can poison itself with the extra waste. Remove the danios & there is enough bacteria to support the puffer. Get it? Also, danios don't like salt.
