If I use rocks and wood from my back-yard or woods, what is the best way to clean it?

i know rocks you can thouroughly scrub with a tooth brush and then boil them... as for the wood i would soakit in a 5 gallon bucket for about 4 days, put something on top of the wood that will keep it submerged under the water, like rocks ;) then after that you scrub it with a toothbrush or a coarse sponge and then boil it(dont forget to keep it submerged while boiling too. then set it out in the sun so it dries off, then wet it down and go over it on more time with a sponge. make sure there is no bark left on the wood or it will come off in your tank and decay.

Viola! you now have clean wood.

its a long, labourous process for wood, but rocks are easy, just make sure they are hard rocks and not sandstone or any other kind that breaks up easily.

and if you do wood, you could get a peice of slate and silicone it to the wood to keep the wood underwater (use PLENTY of silicone), then just cover the slate with your substrate and it looks natural.
