just wondering. in a 56 gallon with 75-100 lbs of live rock, 50 lbs of live sand and a good skimmer. would weekly 50% water changes still be needed?

Depends on its inhabitants. What do you have in mind?

just one gsp, maybe some mushrooms and stuff like that. but no other fish. trying to get some ideas. i will be moving my f8s to a bigger tank soon so i will have the 56 for something else. i would really like to go marine, but really don't want to do big weekly water changes.

Not at all. Just keep an eye on the nitrate & change accordingly. Probably only 10% weekly will be necessary.

I saw some "live sand?" packaged in a plastic bag with sea water. How can it still be live? Wouldn't it die because of the temp, lack of air and food?

could you recommend a particular brand or type. I have heard that particle size is important.

I would just go with plain, medium grained sand. The LR will make it into live sand or you can get a handful from a local reefer to seed it. If you can find a local reef club near you, you might be able to buy cured LR & LS from a local guy for cheap. Check Reef Central for a club.

If you're doing a DSB, the finest sand possible.
