I recently purchased on impulse without research (daft I know)

a Juvenile Tetraodon Mbu being assured he would live happily in my 3ft tank. After getting him home I then did my research and sadly came to the decision that I had to take back due to his eventual size
I hope I have I have made the right decision and am on the look out now for a puffer that would be suitable for my 3ft freshwater aquarium and am hoping someone can provide suggestions?
I did love my mbu and called him Dougie so would really love to be able to get a suitable replacement to look after as they seem really special fish

Congratulations, you are a responsible puffer owner.

Even though I know how sad
it is for you to give the Mbu back.
Check out pufferpedia under the learn tab. It give you pictures, tank size, water etc. I'm sure you can find a great puffer for your tank.
Welcome to the forum.

Technically, he wouldn't. He'd be stunted early on, and die prematurely for growing to his tank.

SAPs are happiest in groups. There's an article on them in the library.

I had a group of four of them for a year, and they totally rock. They are so cute hunting ghost shrimp! I juts sold them about a week ago to help finance a move to monsters. We've got two Mbus now! Woohoo!

The LFS told you the puffer would be fine in that size tank? Shame on them - but then that's all too common.
At the LFS where I work, God help the person that comes to me and tells me they want to buy this or that puffer, because they get a bit of a grilling. In fact what I usually say is, "Tell me what you know about this puffer." Usually, of course, they know nothing about it. We talk for a while, then they leave with a couple of angels or a nice gourami.

Hey iamsupermonkey
Did you get your SAP?
Why don't you get a Fahaka if you want something similar to a MBU
