100% water change

I did a 100% water change on my 5 gal. Added some salt and made sure the water was up to 82F. Put in a new filter cartridge, cleaned off all the plants and his cave, left the rocks alone. Now his belly is white as can be, but hes developed a pitch black spot right in the middle of it and is resting very often on the bottom of the tank. It took him a very long time to get to where he would swim around again. He would float at the top of the tank resting against the glass and i had to tap him to make him move. He wouldnt breathe and his fins werent moving at all. Now his fins are moving and hes breathing again, but hes very lethargic..

What can I do for this?

Chances are he is stressed out from the water change and was resting. Have you got a bigger tank cycling for your GSP yet? He will not last long in that 5g

Hes fine in it for now, though. Hes barely an inch long and i do 25-50% water changes every other day.

He will get stunted....stunting will kill him early. Ergo, he is not fine in there. Stunting is a process that happens early on in a puffers life...while it is growing, if not given enough space, he wont grow....

I dont have enough money. My 10gal. broke the day i got him, so he lived in a bowl with 100% chages 2x daily, and a 5gal was the only thing we could afford. Wal-Mart flushes their returns. I didnt want that to happen.

Make sure you keep up with the daily water changes in that tank. Please, do try and find a bigger tank for him. You can find some good deals on craigslist. If you lived in SoCal, I have a 20 gallon tank I could give you, which will suit him better till he gets to about 3"

If you can't afford the upkeep of the fish, please return it to a local fish store before it dies.

You'd be better off doing 50% WC 2x/day, than 100% WC. Get Prime to dechlorinate the water & do you best to get a bigger tank ASAP. Does your mom like the fish at all? I don't see how she couldn't fall in love with the cute fella. Maybe have her read the posts here about this, so she sees how important it is to get him a bigger tank?

I will try that, pufferpunk.

Christemo, our fish stores dont take returns on fish they dont sell, and if i return it to wal mart, they will only flush it.

Don't bother. I was at PETCO yesterday and it's way cheaper to get the 30 gallon now.
