29G planted with rock work. Probably just be a species only tank so no tank mates. Would prefer freshwater as the plants do better in there. What do ya'll reco?

Welcome to the forum. What fish are you planning on putting there?

Don't know. That is why I'm here. I want some type of puffer or puffers. Just need recos. Either want a couple of dwarf puffers or 1 larger species that will do well in a 29.

In a 29 gallon - they are many FW puffer choices. Just about any listed on the http://www.pufferlist.com - except for Suvatti and Palembang (as they get too big).

Depends on what is available to you also.

I think a suvattii would be fine in a 29g. JMO

Thanks for the link. I'll check it out. Really there isn't anything available. I'll have to order whatever I decide on. I'm just looking for something interesting and different from my other tanks.

With a 30x12" footprint, that should be enough space for that lurker. While 36x12" is what I would use long-term, the 29 is pretty good for that fish.

Dwarf puffers like more plants than rocks, but a 29 is a great DP tank (I happen to have one, with a couple of Otocinclus cats and some Amano shrimp - but those are iffy with some DPs).

I would not keep more than two South American Puffers in there, and would be sure there was good current with them, more important for them than the earlier two mentioned.

after reading this post, i think i changed my mind, and instead of getting 3 SAPS for my 29g, i will see if my LFS will order a Suvatti.

I just had a few questions, if i understand correctly, i would have to have a 6" deep sand substrate?? that sounds a little weird to me, becasue that would only leave 12" of tank space. And i will either be using RO water mixed with my well water, or using RO water treated with Roright.

the only other concern i have about a suvatti is the cost. how much do these things cost??

Ive been researching the suvatti, and i think if the price isnt too much, i will get one. I just have a few more concerns: I know it depends on the actual specimen, but what are other peoples experiences with the aggression twoards the owner of a suvatti? i have a bleeding disorder called hemophelia, wich bacically means that my blood doesnt really clot. so i would keep bleeding if i got a nasty wound.

What type of, and how deep of a subtrate should i use?

I will be using a emperor 280 bio-wheel filter, and possibly a UG filter, if i dont use sand. If i do end up using sand, iwill put live plants in there.
