Stupid Algae

I was wondering if there are any measures I can take to lessen the bloom of the green algae that keeps coming back in my tank. I think it may have something to do with the light that is in my canopy. I have two canopies and on the left side there in minimal to no algae growth but on the right side it tends to be worse. Is this stuff harmful to the fish? I try to get rid of it as soon as it pops up. Any suggestions would help, Thanks, Steve.

Have you tried a blackout?

How old are the lights? How long are they on per day? How strong are they and what type? How much do you feed and how often?
From what you are describing it sounds like bulb issue and a blackout may be in order.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how long the black out should be. The light in question (on the right side where the most algae is) is not old and since it came with the canopy I'm not sure what the wattage is I'll check that out and maybe change the bulbs.

The bulbs are on for about ~12 hours a day and he receives a peice of shrimp about the size of his eye or a little bigger and he gets that once a day.

Since it's only one side of the tank try cutting down the length of time you have your lights on, I keep mine on a max of 8 hours. Another thing you could do is live plants, starve the algae....

I'll cut down the time the one light stays on or keep it off all together and give the plants a try. Thanks.
