he says...

'It turns out that by holding onto a porcupinefish he will start to inflate, which is a fun thing to do. I am assuming he doesn't mind that much as I grabbed him 3 times for these photos and each time he swam off and then swam back into my hand for a stroke before slowly inflating and swimming out.'

What the? Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

and he bitches at anyone who calls it a 'puffer' fish, because technically it is from the two teeth family, not four theet family, and therefore not a puffer.

The arrogance of this man, combined with his apparent cruellness just made me MAD!

He's lucky it didn't bite the fire out of him.

May the Moray of Education soon teach him a lesson.

This guy says

"Pufferfish are members of the Family Tetraodontidae (referred to in scientific texts as Pufferfish and Tobies) while porcupinefish are members of the Family Diodontidae (referred to as Porupinefish and Burrfish). Whilst the two Families are in the same Order (Tetraodontiformes)"

First off, so what? The tradional classification system is largely based on observed similarities and has no definitive meaning in terms of evolutionary relationship.

Second, when dealing in terms of common names, no one is legitimately correct. A stars and stripes puffer is also known as a stripe belly puffer, a spotted puffer, and an infinite other names. Porcupinefish and pufferfish are also known as swellfish, balloonfish, toadfish, globefish, blowfish, etc. It

ALSO, puffing has been known to be letal because there was a recorded 8ft marlin dead with a 3 inch PORC PUFFER in its throat. Plus, even though puffers are smart, they aren't geniuses. They don't have the mechanisms that tell them they are full and will literally eat themselves to death if given the opportunity.

If anyone is willing to post this for me, thanks. I'm not registered with that site and its not worth it for me just for this one post.

Isn't any fish that can inflate it's body known as a puffer or blowfish? Arguing over if a COMMON name is scientifically appropriate is just, silly.

I think the morays will solve this issue with time. May take a while, but they'll get him. A large snowflake was always hand fed in a store close to me for years until one day... The hand was not looking very nice afterwards.

Technically Diodontids and Tetraodontids are not as closely related as the name "puffer" used for both may suggest. This is not only following traditional systematics, but also genetic studies and palaeontology, these two families are separated a really long time and have several important differences, the teeth being just one of them, their puffing also works very different.

Nonetheless I see no point why a Diodon holocanthus should not be called a porcupine puffer as long as everybody knows this is Diodon holocanthus.

Whoever this Andywg condescending idiot is, I just want to punch him in his arrogant face. The fish grabbing didn't bother me as much as his horrible attitude towards the other members on the forum. It made my day to read "And you having swallowed an encyclopedia does not make it any better." from you. :ROFL2:

Anyway, I was on a mission just now to search for scientific articles that call porcupine puffers "puffers", just to prove Andywg's statement, "My contentnion is that you will not see a scientific text referring to a porcupinefish as a pufferfish, thus they technically are not puffers.", wrong.

Here are only 2 of the examples from a long list that I found:
Alexis M. Wiktorowicz, Dean V. Lauritzen and Malcolm S. Gordon (2007) Powered control mechanisms contributing to dynamically stable swimming in porcupine puffers (Teleostei: Diodon holocanthus), Experiments in Fluids, 43(5): 725-735

Yoshinaga, T. Akiyama, K. Nishida, S. Nakane, M. Ogawa, K. Hirose, H. (2007) In vitro culture technique for Cryptocaryon irritans, a parasitic ciliate of marine teleosts, DISEASES OF AQUATIC ORGANISMS, 78(2) 155-160 . "A porcupine puffer Diodon holo- canthus infected with Cryptocaryon irritans was obtained ..."

S u c k that, Mr. Better-than-you-in-every-way!

I know this has no scientific base...but if you just enter "puffer fish" into google.......whats the first image you will find? I thought the porc was the....mascot of all puffers....

The stupidity in that thread is killing me. Seeing him for the porc to puff doesn't bother me nearly as much as half the stupid things said in that thread.

The "my walrus doesn't stink and I'm better than you" attitude bothers me most. Idiocy can come in an educated form, but even then, education is questionable. I could read a bunch of stuff I know nothing about, regurgitate it, and make it sound convincing.
