hello everyone i just got a new puffer which was supposed to be a palembang ! but i think it is a ceylon (not much difference then !) i brought him home yesterday and put him in fresh water as that was what he came in

he is about 5 to 6 inch long with a very black belly and black spots which are outlined in a yellowy colour and saddles on his top
i willpost a pic tonight when hubby brings me the camera

It looks like Tetraodon Sabahensis to me. But wait for someone to confirm. I'm not 100% sure. :D

I would have done the same thing. If he come's from the store in fw then I would make the tank fw and slowly raise the sg. But I would still wait for someone else to answer. :D

Not so sure, but I am inclined towards the ceylon....a little hard to tell when his colors are faded like that, looks like he took a small beating at the LFS, but should be good to go in a few days....but he does look like he has those bands on his back and those nice spots that go down through the belly, but with the belly that dark right now, I am not sure.

You gonna have some fun with this puffer!

I went back and looked at the pictures and I think you are both right. It could be a ceylon. The size threw me off. I don't know why but I was thinking ceylon's dont' get that big. I must have been thinking about another puffer.

Good water parameters is a good start, and the right sized tank.... melafix will help with the regrowth of fins. Give him a few days to settle in and you might start seeing a difference. As for changing the water over to brackish, let him get settled first, then you can start raising the SG by .002 per week.

Just getting him out of the LFS environment where he was probably packed in with a bunch of other puffers will stress him out less.

Good luck. Other than his fins being torn up he looks well fed.
