how long would it take for a porcupine puffer or possibly a dog faced puffer (juvy 2-4 inches) stay in a 46 gal bowfront tank before i would have to upgrade?

less than a year, 6 months probably, they grow, and they grow fast....(you can probably plan on about an inch a month for a while) It will probably work out cheaper to get the proper tank size first, a 120 for a porc, or a 100 for a dog face puffer.

that sucks. i just got my 46 bowfront back from the ex's place, and i want to get a cool puffer like that but i guess not. i've already got 3 tanks in my apt. cant fit another one, especially a tank of that size. any other suggestions? already have gsp's fig 8's and a valentini.

Yes.....get that tank cycled, possibly low brackish, get a Takifugu Ocellatus, and raise the salinity till you get to SW.......you will not regret this awesome little aggressive puffer. He is like one of the big puffers, just small......you will know what I mean.....Super, super super aggressive, but super, super super awesome!

I think most places sell them as FW puffers. but they are really SW fish....only thing with them is, make sure you can keep the temperature low. Below 70 would be a nice plus

that fish is very difficlut to keep & needs a chiller to keep the tank in the 60s.

if you really want a marine puffer, why not go with one of the tobies? check the puffer pedia. I have a solandri and he is much more colorful and active than some of the larger species. You could keep him in a 46g along with a gobie ( I have mine in with a gobie- no real aggression issues and the gobie cleans up the little pieces the puffer leaves behind). Make sure to cycle the tank and get enough live rock.
