You can get one from my tank if you're in Ottawa.

My two monsters recently bred, but I also had a few fish added to the tank (roommate closed his and needed a temporary rehome for two SAEs), so I think that might have shocked most of the babies. I have seen about 4-5 baby crayfish that are bigger than adult cherry shrimp (two adult crayfish are about 6 inches or so), but hopefully there are a bunch more hidden in the decorations (they're in a 50 gallon breeder).
Anyone else here breed crayfish?

that does look like mine. Mine will turn redish like that and then darken up with mood changes. How much is is?
Agnate- How long did it take for your crays to breed? How often a year do they breed? Lastly how big were they when they started breeding?
thanks

Umm, well, I kinda just set up a tank my furnace room (50 gallon breeder I got for $30 and some spare HOB filters that were lying around the house). I think the tank was up for about 4-5 months now, and the crays were about 4-5 inches or so before I noticed baby crayfish swimming around (I got the crays at about 1.5 inches).
To be honest, though, I don't check the tank very often (maybe once a week, if they're lucky), and there are also cherry shrimp in there, so I didn't even notice the baby crays until they started outgrowing the cherries! ^_^ My roommate and I would just toss in our extra plant trimmings and I just check to make sure there's still enough in there.

i guess i need to stop looking a maybe I'll just notice them one day. Did you do any special substrate for the babies to hide in or just normal gravel?

Well, I had a bunch of already cycled gravel (I think), so I just dumped that in there. If you're starting up a tank, use crushed coral or aragonite, as they'll be WAY healthier from the added calcium. I put in pieces of coral rock, though, to compensate for the lack of calcium-rich substrate, so I'm sure that's helped a bit.
When I move in 6 months, I'm going to replace their substrate with a mix of aragonite and crushed coral, and plumb that system in with Abe's to-be-bought 40-50 gallon breeder to give them more water volume and whatnot. Plus, I'll just be able to pluck his food from under his tank, then, haha!

i saw one baby today that was the size of a small ghost shrimp. I didn't see any others though. I wonder if one of my fish in the tank was eating the babies. I will have to find out which one it was and take him out. Those aren't for him!!!!

If there isn't lots of calcium present (both dissolved and solid), it's possible that a lot of babies will die after their first molt. It's one reason many people suggest using aragonite and crushed coral.
