hi guys, ive just freead up a 48"x12"x18" tank and im looking to get some puffers for it i was thinking about dividing it and having a pair of carinotetraodon salivator on one side and then tetraodon suvattii on the other would this be ok, any other suggestions welcome.

that sounds like a 55gallon tank?
it could work with one salivator (they need 20 gallons) and the suvattii needs 30gallons.

just have a look around the pufferpedia and see what you like. :)

Generally salivators don't go well in a pair. The male tends to kill the female if they are the only two (there are of course exceptions).

I think it's 45 gallons? I used one of those calculator things. I'm not sure what the puffers would do if they could see each other, might be fine, or might start going crazy trying to get at the other. If you're not fussed about FW, BW or SW, how about a GSP? Or you could have 9 dwarf puffers in there. Orrr 4 SAPs. Gosh there's many options. I agree with Jase, the best thing to do is just look at the pufferpedia to see what takes your fancy.

Get a dwarf puffer or two and some semi active fish. Many others will suggest no tank mates for them, but the only aggression I have seen in mine was against each other. Try Kuhli Loaches, or a small community of tetras or mollies. you get the best of both worlds: a full looking tank and one or two main features.

Or some otos would go better with dwarf puffers, and are interesting to watch.

dwarf puffers in a 4 foot tank LOL that would be like trying to find the dead pixel on a 36" widescreen TV with static interference hahaha
Personally, I would go with 3 or possibly 4 Figure 8 puffers :)
And yeah, it will be a 45 gallon tank, it worked out at 10,368 cubic inches
in actual fact, you'll probably only have about 40 gallons of water in there after you have substrate and decor in place :)

puffer puffer puffer every time :) I used to want a piranha at one point, then I found puffers haha
do the F8 thing, great little fish, you'll be able to have a smashing set-up for them in that tank :)
I'm even now thinking about getting the missus to not sell a similar tank we have in her mothers garage just so I can set up an F8 tank when we move hehe

Hey now... my 3ft tank has 5 DPs in it... it's better than TV.

Especially when you get the occasional 'puffer train' going around the tank, usually the biggest male accompanied by 2 or 3 of the females.

I'd go with one very happy GSP or 3-4 Figure 8's personally..
