I got a new 65 gallon tank, I currently have a 10 gallon with 3 gsp in it, they are about 1.25 inches big, I sold 1 GSP all ready..... the reason for this was that i went to the lfs and the gsp there were mis treated so i purchased the last 3 of them. I sold the healthiest one, he had full color and i kept the other 2 which were very very discolored and just sitting there. How would i put the 10 gallon into the 65. I added some extra plastic plants and rocks to the 10 gallon to accumlate extra bacteria. Would i just take the filter from the 10 gallon and place it onto the 65 with the new filters i will be using? along with all the corals and rocks etc?

Are your puffers already in saltwater? I would just set it up and fill it with water, you can put the other filter on the tank to help the cycling process but you will need a bigger filter. You will most likely want some sand as a substrate in the tank.

they are in a salnity of 1.006 right now. and i have a ac 110 for the other tank but problem is can i just move the old filter over and use it with the 65 gallon without cycling it?

Umm i would say yes but i might wait a day and do some tests just to make sure it works

i reccommend waiting at least a week so the new, larger filter can seed from the smaller filter. it will result in a mini cycle, which can potentially have negative affects on the fish.

But if I do that then the gsp will not have a filter in the 10 gallon. I think I might just keep the 2 gsp in the 10 gallon and do like 20-30% water changes every day or 2? and cycle the big tank with lots of seeding material and an extra sponge form my tank? Unless there is a way I can do it with without the filter for the 10 gallon

or is it a good idea to throw the new filter into the 10 gallon and have it work with the old filter with the 10 gallon for a day or 2 so it can gather the good bacteria then have it on the 65 gal?

If the filter in the ten gallon has enough bacteria for all the fish, that plus the extra dilution factor of all the water in the 65 should be enough for it to seed the new filter easily, as long as both filters are running on the 65 together for at least a few weeks.

sorry could you rephrase that, i don't quite understand all of it.

Put the filter from the ten, and the new filter, on the 65. Just a well used filter off a tank should have enough bacteria to cycle a tank for the same fish. With the extra water the 65 has to dilute wastes, even if it's not up the the job the first half day, no notable waste will accumulate because the volume of the 65 is MANY times more than the volume of the ten. If you run both filters on the 65 for the next month, just the new filter should have plenty of bacteria and you can remove the 10 gallon filter, if you desire.

Hes basically saying to run the filter from your 10 gallon tank along with your new filter on the 65 gallon tank for about a month.

How long has the 10g been set up with fish in it? There is a fishless cycling article in our Library that will explain the cycling process.

10 gallon has been set up for about 1.5 months. it has 0 nitrates 0 nitrites and 0 amonia. ph is about 7.5 and temp is constant 79

What test kits are you using? A well established tank should be showing nitrate, especially an overstocked one. Something's not right there.
