Well I figured i would ask all the experts here and try and figure out what type of puffer this is?

it was listed as 'red eye' but obviously not that. It's in fresh water.

maybe a sub species of the target puffer family?? or an abei? not sure if you can see the colouring but it's definitely chocolate brown.

Yeah that was my first guess, but there seems to be many 'variations' of the abei puffer?

I.e. 'Woland's' 1st puffer is redish, same pattern, but blue eyese?


and then Woland's 2nd puffer has the same markings, red eyes, but Green body? like that of the fang/target puffer? (T Conchin...)

I don't really see anything close except 'Hilly's' Puffer

just want to make sure. Ceylons (T. Fluviatis) Figure 8's T. Biocellatus and South americans (C. Asellus) are sometimes put in the same catagory also.

there are always variations within species, plus color can be affected by many things like diet, substrate, your light's color temperature, your puffers mood. But no doubt yours is an abei. and i could be wrong but the picture of wolands abei looks like he took it when is puffer was stressed, or thats his normal coloration i'm not familiar with that specimen

I'll second the idea that that's an Abei you've got there. You'll quickly discover that they are very good at colour changing... My Abei has looked like all of those pics at different times since I've had him... The Bruce is absolutely right, the colouring seems to depend a lot on a variety of things...

Yours is definitely an Abei, and a VERY CUTE Abei at that!

It's actually very passive, it think because it was the runt of the group. poor thing was with tankmates much bigger... getting chomped up

May I ask where you purchased your Abei? I'm just east of Toronto, and would be interested if there's a store out there that stocks other puffers...

their by steeles and silver star? it's about one block east of kennedy. across from pacific mall.

They had 4 abei's. I think they just got them in cause i saw them on the weekend and prepared a tank and got it on wednesday. They also have target puffers... thats been there for awhile, poor things are in tiny divder/cells... 40 each though.. They've been feeding them goldfish feeders and the abeis bloodworms (15). They usually have green spotted puffers too. (i can't be bothered to do brackish)

There's also a store here in Ottawa that can sometimes get Abeis (they call them Mekong Puffers as the common name, but if you give them the scientific name, they should know what you're talking about) and I believe they'll ship them to you, especially if you're only in Toronto.

yes... haven't tested for ammonia or nitrites, but tank has been around for over 6 weeks seeded it initially with plants and filter media from an established tank ... and had ciclhlids (now removed). it's also planted with anacharis, javafern, and giant hygro.
