can a gsp be kept in fresh water all its live?

If it can be done or if is recommended is two different answers. Yes, techincally you can keep a GSP in FW, but the fish then will have a poor health and a shorter life, so it's not good for the fish. GSPs should and must be kept in BW or SW to give them a good life. That's why I never ever would keep one in FW. If I get a drop in the SG in my GSP's tank, I can see the difference on her. Her colors get more dull, she hides more and also can start window surfing, which is a typical sign of stress on puffers.

oh ok,i got 1 today and the shop idiots said it was a fresh water puffer and would be fine with my 3 sap.
well back to the shop with him next weekend

Why don't you try to rehome him to someone that can properly house him?
Otherwise someone else will buy him thinking it's purely FW too.

I was able to find a good home for a F8 I didn't have room for on craigslist, now he has a brackish 30 gallon to himself.

Call around to local LFS. I was able to give one of mine to Petco, believe it or not. The girl who manages the fish area seemed very happy to get him, put him in a brackish tank by himself, and said he'd probably be adopted out within a week.

Call around. You'll find someone.

its a good idear and i will look into it.
its ashame i cant keep him but i only have time for my 350 litre tank at the moment but might do a brakish tank and get 4 gsp in the future

Better be a BIG tank!
