That's not a C. patoca.

That is a Takifugu niphobles, sometimes called grass puffer,

This is one of the few puffers that are bred commercially in large numbers as food fish.

That's what I was thinking. That was one of the 1st puffers I ever owned. Got some really bad info on those guys.

are you sure that species has been bred in captivity? never heard of that. as it is such a small species i do not think it is one of those that are bread for the japanese food-industry. they usually use much bigger species as takifugu chinensis, t. rubripes and t. obscurus.

but still: does it really say that they are breeding it for food? they are just too small and i have never heard of commercial breeding of this species for food!

Kusafugu (grass puffer) is still being imported to Japan and caught in Japanese waters as a food fish. Aside using this species as an experimental animal, the aquaculture institute given above is breeding it for money (commercially).

Since the "ripe" adults of this species are easily caught, because they are spawing on specific days and in known waters, breeding it is not too difficult and can replace wild caught specimens. Naturally, due to its size it is much less bred than tiger puffers, which are among the most bred fish in general.

Also see "Accumulation of tetrodotoxin and 4,9-anhydrotetrodotoxin in cultured juvenile kusafugu Fugu niphobles by dietary administration of natural toxic komonfugu Fugu poecilonotus liver" for sources of captive bred T. niphobles.

Anyway, is your puffer getting along fine? Mine is extremely fearful of me and whenever i approach the tank, it goes into the frantic swimming mode and it only feeds when no one is near the tank. Pretty strange puffer.
