Well after a mjor ich infestation, my F* puffer died this morning . So I want to get a different puffer, after I make completely sure my current tank is safe. I was wondering what guys would feel is the freshwater version of a F8, in terms of size, activity and personality. I would get a nother f8 but mixing salt is a pain

Sorry to hear about your F8. It's always sad to see a puffer go.

Either an Abei, Salivator, Irrubesco, or a Baileyi (Hairy puffer) would probably be your best bet, but that depends on your tank size.

Could an Abei live in a 20 long for its entire life?

Unfortunately, no. If you have a 20 long, you should look into a Congo Puffer (tetraodon miurus). They aren't overly active, but I've heard they're pretty neat (they like to bury themselves in the sand).

An irrubesco or a salivator can live in a 20 long for their life, though, and they both have very nice colour/patterns.

Auriglobus Silus makes a great single-species 20G fw puffer.

Carinotetraodon lorteti is a lot more brave than the irrubesco (at least mine are). They are curious, social and pretty aggressive. I love them!
When I stand in front of my 9 tank rack, I am surely watched by at least two lortetis and two F8s, and of course Hufflepuff. I really find the lortetis a lot alike F8s, except that they are more aggressive (the lortetis).

Well I think I am going to go ahead and get either a salvitor or a loreti... My only problem is how do I get one?

Haha well i actually work at one.. Only issue is I dont think the distributer will have individual species. Im pretty sure it will just be red-eye puffer and will be for all three species... Well I guess ill just have to wait until monday for the stock list.

Sometimes if you contact the distributor and provide them with a solid resource (like this forum's Library), they will attempt to identify the species when they get them. I haven't actually tried this, though, so I don't make any guarantees, haha!

My LFS can order puffers through latin names...hopefully at least one of your suppliers offers that. On the other hand, all of the red eyes are interesting fish, and would well suited for the tank. I'm partial towards lorteti's as that's what I have, but they're all quite cool fish. It probably wouldn't be much of a loss to end up with a different type of "red eye puffer".

Well, unfortunately, I've found Salivators next to impossible in the US, while I've heard they are fairly common in the UK.

Lorteti's on the other hand I see online fairly often.

Well I checked out the order list.
Under BW Fish, they have a Red-eye Jade puffer. What species do you guys think it is? I think I will order it.

A little googling gives Jade puffer as t. fluvatilis. But red-eyed jade puffer, that was a new one... Well, the fluvatilis is at least a BW puffer.

Hmm. Ive decided to hold off until next week. The distributor listed Red-Eye Puffers as coming in on sunday, so Ill have just wait for those instead of possibly getting a fluvialitis.
