is there anyway to tell male and female figure 8s apart?

None known.

lol typical im sure there are ways to find out but im not willing to cut open my favorite puffers ( i dont realy play favorites but my first puffer and my favorite puffer happen to be the pair of figure 8s although shark beat and karma are almost level for favorite but i need to get to know shark bait better so the figure 8s hold a speical spot slightly infronto f the rest not by much but its there)

You could take them to a specialized vet and have an ultrasound perform. It'd be a lot of money/effort, though, not to mention stress on the fish.

lol well i have been thinking about pet insurance for budda ( my english bull dog) but im not thinking they will let me addmy fish no matter how much longer it may live past my dog ( bull dog 8 years average figure 8s 10-15 i do believe) pluse i doubt i have any one in the area willing to give a fish an ultra sound

yeah but im thinking the fine print calls that cat and dog i mean how can you help a fish wiht insurance no insurance company is going to by my melafix

Hehe- I tried to get my renter's insurance to cover my fish if they died in the event of a power outage, fire etc. They said no dice.

You could always just buy your own ultrasound machine like Tom Cruise did
