The store in which I purchased my puffer from has several Monotrete Abei in stock now. It seems that they just order Red Eye Puffers and then figure out what they recieved. The pufferpedia doesnt seem to supply much information on them.

Are they like my fish and best to keep one to a tank? Or can they be kept togethor in a adequately setup aquarium? Also is there no information on them breeding? They seem to be very similar to my Montrete Cochinchinensis which I know can breed prolifically if you can only get a pair (I will be working on that).

If they can't be kept togetother or bred I may just purchase some nice Figure 8's they have 30 or so of them. But I really want to try my hand at breeding puffers.

I wold definately keep as a singleton.

Even the cochinchensis should be kept seperate, except for spawning. Then the female should be removed & the male will take care of the eggs. I have heard of this love story ending badly otherwise.

Abei's should be kept as a single specimen for sure... A friend ended up with two in a heavily planted 65 gallon tank and less than 36 hours later, one was dead... They are definitely one of the most aggressive freshwater puffers available!

M. abei can be bred. There was an article in May/June 2007 in the magazine Amazonas (in German). PM Martin Hi., he likely can give you the email of the author if you have specific questions.

I think he had 4 animals in a densly planted 80cmx60cmx40xm tank (approx. 200 l, 50 gallons). They bit each other, but also bred. After breeding they had to be seperated to protect the eggs.
