Lost battle with IPs

Sadly, my newer F8 died Saturday. I'm about 90% certain that it was because of IPs. I got him a few weeks ago as a rescue. I saw him at the lfs, and he was so peppy and interested in what was going on and looking for food. I just had to get him. I treated for IPs, and gave him extra feedings to help put some weight back on. It seemed to be working, but last week he started seeming less energetic, and he didn't seem to be eating as well as before.
Then, on Friday, I did a water change, and about 2-3 hours after that, I saw him just sort of bobbing about like he was dead. I looked closer, and I could see him breathing and moving his fins. I scooped him into a container to take a closer look. He couldn't keep himself upright at all!He was aimlessly swimming around the container, and he looked like there was no one home. I tried feeding some shrimp soaked in Garlic Guard and Gel Tek IP treatment, but he completely ignored it. I debated about putting him out of his misery, but I just couldn't do it. Plus I had no clove oil. After like 20-30 minutes he was looking a bit better, so I put him back into the tank. (My quarantine/hospital tank is taken up by a goldfish at the moment, so I couldn't quarantine him from the rest of the tank.) Then within an hour he was dead. I waited for a bit to make sure, but there was absolutely no movement and no breathing.
I was so sad and disheartened! From now on, there will be no more rescue buys ever! No matter how peppy they look. I just can't stand to put so much effort into it just to watch them die.
