We had someone suggest to us to get a powerhead. We don't have an undergravel filter so it is purely there for aeration and to create a current. We also have a fluval filter. We have noticed though that with both in there.. there really does seem to be quite the current going on, but we've put most of hte current directed along the top of the water. The aeration keeps a lot of bubbles in the tank and almost seems to make it seem murky, but if you look it's just LOTS of tiny bubbles. We have it turned down to the lowest level.

Could this be harmful? Or is it just completely useles and unneeded?

At the time we thought it would be good to have a current, more air, circulation to help the filter with the live feeding, and also the added exercise the fish would get from the current. Just wanting to make sure we're not doing harm.

IMO, they're not necessary but if the fish like it, use it.

Surface agitation is important for O2 exchange.

yea powerheads arnt necessary by any means like pufferpunk said but they arnt harmful by any means also,well unlesss they are way to strong then that could cause problems. so if you want to put one in there and the fish seem to like it go for it.

also idk if you have sand as a substrate but what you can do is put a power head blowing across the bottom of the sand then another small one blowing towards the intake of the filter and that helps keep the sand clean from all the fish poo and junk that builds up, but thats just and idea for if you have sand in the tank
