once again i wonder are you sure the spelling is correct? im allways interested in looking up new fish but i cant seem to find anything on the one in question.

you said it was it was an old picture? maybe they figured out it was just a bronze puffer and changed its classification or something idk

(and watch for the double posting)

Auriglobus (formerly Chonerhinos) nefastus is very similar to A. modestus and A. silus. They are told apart by specific details: A. nefastus has a protruding upper lip and its tiny spines point to the belly. The color is not a good character to use, but they are generally more green than the other named species.

The picture you referred to is correct. It is a A. nefastus and the picture (not the page which has a lot of wrong information on other sub-pages) was made by the scientist who described this species in 1982. I would not care about the common names too much...they are not very useful anyway.

yeah we need to get the aquarium business and potion them to standerdize the common names so they all have one and only they get that one and mislabeling should be a crime ( or maybe i have been up to long and am being dramatic but it would be nice if every one knew because it had some order ) laten names are hard to remember sometimes)

I disagree here... the scientific names are the only ones following specific rules, the International code of zoological nomenclature. Noone will ever establish an additional system for common names just because some people feel this might be too much to learn, fishbase lists some common names in various languages, but that's it. Also, we want it as international as possible, not everyone having fish or trading with fish speaks English, but everyone around the world with basic puffer knowledge will know what Tetraodon nigroviridis is, but a Green Spotted Puffer ? I think they are more yellow mostly . I believe traders and hobbyists should use the rather well established scientific names, which are the best system existing so far and it's not too difficult.

Neale gives good reasons here (especially last paragraph):

Do yourself a favor & stay away from Puffernet. A ton of mis-information there.

(Please do not couble post. It gets confusing having 2 threads on the same subject.)

that is a great point but then again you have to do your research before even going a common name no matter how it might change will help you find the fish in the tank i think you would know what your getting into but as long as you get a fresh water for your fresh water and a saltwater for your saltwater if you go to just get something for a specific purpose ( like say all my fish sit on the ground then you would be able to go and say i want a sword ( because swords swim around) but laten names make that hard and at least in America we should get our stuff straight not every one speaks English but if where English is spoken common names are more organized it would realy help ( wont happen but would be nice thats all )

sorry about the double post it was a mistake and why go anywhere else when you have the pufferpedia and when that doesnt have enough for your taste you post a specific question and get the information you want i would say between every one on the puffer forum every puffer in aquaria has been kept at least once and most probaly 2 or more times its jsut a matter of patience

I'm sure there are puffers in the ocean/lakes/streams that haven't even been discovered yet!

yea but it doesnt matter how organized the internet gets with the common names, even a puffer as common as the green spotted puffer, a name that wal mart can get right (which i believe is sickning how they can keep 25 GSP's in a 10 gallong and get away with it) i whent into a small store and they had one labeled as a "yellow speckled blowfish" the people that are seelling the fish that know nothing about them but just get them in with their orders will just make a name up.

people that work at LFS will know that happens some time. they get a fish in that all they know is the scientific name, and some stores dont take the time to research what it is or what care it requires and just make up a name for what it looks like and sell it to the first person that thinks its cute.
